Chapter Nine

Chuck moved his hands into the pockets of his wool coat and Chris nestled her arm around his arm as they headed up the sidewalk. As they neared the steps, she heard her sister squealing in delight as they drew nearer.

“Who’s that?”

Hearing the interest in his voice, she wanted to turn and run. However, she knew they were not going anywhere but towards her beautiful and prowling sister. She could almost smell the pheromones in the air around her.

She felt almost shabbily dressed compared to the threads Terri wore today. She always looked immaculate. Her hair was different, she noticed as they neared the porch. She had added highlights to her brown, making it appear redder. It made her sister look ravishing. Ravishing. Ravish. That was the word. Her sister barely spared her a smile as her gaze zeroed in on Chuck, traveling up and down his tall frame.

Her brown eyes were alight with marked interest, fairly licking him as they ravished him. Ravish. She felt almost sick as she moved to hug her sister, noticing already how her cat like eyes lit up when her gaze traveled up Chuck, zeroing in on his rugged, handsome face.

“Well, well,” Terri gushed as they separated. Her attention again quickly turned to the six foot two hunk. “We were wondering if you would make it. Who have you brought with you this time?”

Just the way she said it made Chris wish they had never come. Her tone suggested she knew that Chris did not really have a man in her life and whoever this guy was, he was probably being paid very well.

“Terri, this is Chuck Hollis. Chuck, this is my sister, Terri.”

“Terri. It’s nice to meet you.” He offered his hand and she took it with both of hers, stepping closer, too close.

“Well, if you aren’t an improvement over the others, I don’t know what.” She was gushing over him. “Are you staying the whole weekend?”

“That was the plan, yeah.”

“The plan.” Terri’s grin hit Chris as snide. “Wonderful. This weekend just might be fun after all. Come on. Mother will definitely want to meet this one.” With that, she turned and fairly jiggled back inside, leaving the two of them out on the porch.

Chris took a deep breath. That went better than she had anticipated. Chuck’s clothes were still on him.

“Whoa! Bet I can guess her middle name. It’s Bunny, right? Whew!” She heard Chuck breathe out the word as her sister departed. Her heart sank. Deflated, she allowed him to usher her inside. On wooden legs, she walked through the house, heading down the foyer and into the living room, where her mother was directing the placement of her banister decorations.

As Chris entered, her mother turned, glanced, and turned back. Chris noticed the slight lines at the corners of her mother’s mouth, but other than that, she hadn’t aged at all. She watched as a smile broke across her face. “Darling! You made it! Come give your mother a kiss! Who’s your friend?”

“This is Chuck Hollis.
